Vasectomy

Unlike a traditional neuter, a vasectomy sterilizes your dog without removing the testes. The vas deferens (the tube that transports sperm) is interrupted by removing a small section or sealing it shut. This achieves permanent sterilization while keeping his natural hormone production completely intact.

Why not remove the testes?

A male’s testes produce hormones, most notably testosterone. Normal testosterone production regulates puberty and maturation. Male behaviors are retained, which can affect working-dog personality traits such as confidence, assertiveness, and guarding. Natural testosterone levels also maintain muscle mass, bone density, and coat quality.

Why choose a traditional neuter?

A cryptorchid dog is at risk of testicular cancer or torsion and is not a candidate for vasectomy. Cryptorchidism is also hereditary and thus a risk for any potential puppies. To lessen or prevent behaviors such as aggression, roaming, and marking territory, a traditional neuter is preferred.

Possible vasectomy benefits:

If you are happy with the male behaviors your dog has or will have based on breed and parentage, a vasectomy will retain these behaviors. If you like “the look” of a male, this will also remain natural as their testes are not removed. This procedure is theoretically reversible (although expensive, complex, and not guaranteed).

Possible vasectomy risks:

Testicular cancer will still be possible. Any current or developing testosterone-driven aggressiveness will not be reduced.

Vasectomy Cons:

This procedure provides no significant effect on behavior.  Your dog can still be fertile for 24 hours after the procedure. This procedure does not lessen potential prostate problems and your pet will still be attracted to in-heat females.
