An Ovary-Sparing Spay (OSS) is similar to a traditional spay, except at least one ovary is left intact while the uterus is removed. This procedure achieves permanent sterilization while allowing your dog to retain her natural female hormones.

Why remove the uterus?

Without a uterus, the dog is considered sterile as she cannot get pregnant even if she is bred. She is also not in danger of developing pyometra, which is a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.

Why not remove the ovaries?

The ovaries are essential for reproduction, but they are also endocrine glands that support healthy musculoskeletal and metabolic systems, regulate normal female behavior, and affect anti-neoplastic health. Ovary retention allows for normal puberty and maturation even when dogs are spayed very young.

Possible OSS benefits:

There are several benefits associated with normal female hormone levels. OSS may lower the risk of certain joint disorders and cancers. Urinary incontinence risk is also seen less after early OSS than early traditional spay.

Possible OSS risks:

The OSS surgery is more complex and time-consuming than the OHE. Active heat cycles, including the risk of attracting male dogs, must be addressed with potential boarding facilities. Ovarian or mammary tumors are still possible later in life.

OSS Cons:

Although the uterus has been removed, your pet will still experience a normal heat cycle, including includes bleeding and heat behaviors, while also attracting males.
